Report (Factual)
Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT)
Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT)
Construction: In small groups, students pool their notes together to reconstruct the paragraph, ensuring the General Classification and Mechanism are technically correct.
In the MoT phase, students dissect how a News Report (Factual) is constructed:
Once the class has a draft, they engage in a "Group Edit" focusing on the Language Features learned in the MoT phase:
The Tense Check: "Did we use Simple Present? Change 'the fish ate' to 'fish eat'.
= .......................................
Technical Terms: "Can we replace the word 'bad stuff' with 'toxic substances' or 'pollutants'?"
= .......................................
This is a highly effective JCoT technique:
The teacher reads a summary of Renewable Energy (from the original text) at a normal speed.
Students are only allowed to jot down keywords (not full sentences).
In groups, students reconstruct the text to be as close to the original in structure and meaning as possible, but using their own words.
The reconstructed results are compared between groups.
Students with higher listening proficiency assist their group mates in understanding difficult sections, such as the parts regarding "Photovoltaic cells" or "Hydroelectric dams."
By the end of this session, students should have a draft of a new Report text produced through group work with a solid structure. This serves as a bridge before they move on to writing individually (Independent Construction).
