Report (Factual)
Building knowledge of the Field (BKoF)
Building knowledge of the Field (BKoF)
Do you feel that your city is hotter now than it was five years ago? Why do you think that is?"
Visual Analysis: Show two contrasting images:
"Which one helps the Earth breathe, and which one acts like a heavy blanket?"
Factual reports use "Technical/Scientific Language." Students need to understand these concepts before listening to the full text.
Key Concept Matching: Give students cards with terms and simple definitions to match:
Fossil Fuels: Natural energy like coal and oil.
Greenhouse Effect: When gases trap heat like a blanket.
Renewable Energy: Energy that never runs out (Sun, Wind, Water).
Interactive Word Wall: Create a list of "Action/Linking Verbs" used in reports, such as refers to, consists of, causes, results in.
Explain that a Report isn't a story; it is a factual map.
General Classification: The "Big Definition" at the start.
Description (Bundle of Facts): Details about mechanisms (Greenhouse Effect), impacts (Sea levels), and solutions (Renewable energy).
Discussion: Ask, "If we want to find out WHAT causes the Earth to get warmer, which part of the text should we focus on?"
The "Impact" Brainstorm: Based on the title "Science of Climate Change," ask students to predict what will happen to coastal cities like Jakarta if the ice melts.
The "Energy" Sort: Show icons of a sun, a lump of coal, a wind turbine, and a gas canister. Ask students to categorize them into "Good for the Planet" vs. "Bad for the Planet" before hearing the "Solution" part of the text.
Teacher: "Class, look at this picture of a Greenhouse (a glass house for plants). It stays warm inside even when it's cold outside. Did you know the Earth has a 'gas blanket' that does the same thing?"
Student: .............................
Teacher: "Exactly! But what happens if the blanket gets too thick? Today, we will listen to a report about how our 'blanket' is changing. We will hear about cities like Jakarta and Karawang. What do you think is happening there?"
Student: .............................
Teacher: "Right. Let's look at some words we will hear: Fossil Fuels and Renewable Energy. Which one do you think is like the sun?"
