Discussion (Panel/Debate)
Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT)
Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT)
The teacher invites students to compose a new text with a more specific focus, such as: "Why the Hybrid Model is the Best Choice for Modern Companies."
Activity: The teacher reads several argumentative points from the original model text. Students must listen and decide which points can be combined to support the "Hybrid" model.
The teacher provides a framework on the board, and students fill in the content orally.
A. Constructing the Thesis
Teacher: "Our model text discussed a debate. Now, let's make a strong position statement about the hybrid model. How should we start?" Student A: "After looking at WFH and WFO, I think a combination of both is best." Student B: "Add the words 'productivity' and 'connection' to make it stronger!" Draft: "After weighing the pros and cons of remote and office work, I strongly believe that a hybrid model is the most effective solution for the modern economy because it combines flexibility with collaboration."
B. Constructing Argument 1 (Taking the Strengths of WFH)
Teacher: "Listen to the first argument in the model text about flexibility. How can we fit that in here?" Student C: "We can say employees still save commute time on certain days." Draft Result: "First, the hybrid model maintains employee productivity. By working from home a few days a week, staff save time on commuting. Therefore, they have more energy to focus on complex tasks without office distractions."
C. Constructing Argument 2 (Taking the Strengths of WFO)
Teacher: "Now, listen to the argument about 'water cooler conversations.' How does this fit into the hybrid model?" Student D: "On the days they go into the office, they can have those meetings in person!" Draft Result: "Furthermore, the hybrid model ensures spontaneous collaboration. When employees meet in person on designated office days, they can share ideas freely. This ensures that the corporate culture stays strong and innovation continues to thrive."
The teacher reads the drafted text aloud but intentionally leaves out the conjunctions. Students must listen and shout out the correct transition word (such as Furthermore, However, Therefore).
Teacher: "...staff save time on commuting. [blank], they have more energy." Students: "Therefore!"
Teacher: "Let's close this. Use the word 'Ultimately' like in our model text." Final Draft Result: "In conclusion, the hybrid model offers a balanced approach to work life. It provides the focus of home and the connection of the office. Ultimately, this flexibility makes it the best strategy for companies to keep their workers happy and innovative."
