Independent Construction of the Text (ICoT)
Students are asked to choose a specific stance based on the "Future of the Workplace" issue. They are no longer just summarizing both sides; they must convince the reader of the single best choice according to their perspective.
Topic Options:
Why Remote Work is the Best Option for Tech Companies.
The Necessity of Traditional Offices for Building Team Spirit.
Why Small Businesses Should Fully Embrace the Hybrid Model.
Before they begin writing, students perform an independent Interactive Listening activity:
Task: Students find one short news clip or podcast (1–2 minutes) regarding their chosen topic.
Requirement: Students must note down two key phrases or data points they hear (e.g., productivity statistics or a CEO quote) to include in their writing as evidence.
Below is an example of the type of text a student is expected to produce independently:
Headline: Why the Traditional Office is Still Essential
[Thesis] While remote work has become popular recently, many people think the traditional office is outdated. However, I strongly argue that a physical office remains a critical necessity for any successful business. Without a shared workspace, companies risk losing their creativity and social bond.
[Argument 1] The main reason is that physical offices foster spontaneous innovation. As mentioned in the panel discussion, "water cooler" conversations often lead to brilliant ideas. When people are in the same room, they can brainstorm instantly without waiting for a Zoom link. This face-to-face interaction is something that digital tools cannot fully replicate.
[Argument 2] Furthermore, working in an office protects the mental health of employees by creating a clear boundary. When working from home, the lines between personal life and work often become blurred, leading to severe burnout. By going to an office, workers can socialize with their colleagues, which reduces the feeling of isolation and keeps them motivated.
[Conclusion] In conclusion, although technology allows us to work from anywhere, the office is still the best place for connection and innovation. Therefore, companies should not abandon their physical offices if they want to maintain a strong corporate culture and a healthy workforce.
Once the text is finished, students pair up for a check:
Activity: Student A reads their text aloud. Student B listens (without looking at the paper) and must answer: "What was the strongest argument I just heard?"
Goal: To ensure the argumentative structure sounds logical and convincing when delivered orally (the listening-to-speaking aspect).
Students double-check their writing with the following guide:
Structure: Do I have a Thesis, Arguments, and Reiteration?
Connectors: Did I use words like Furthermore, On the other hand, or Consequently?
Evidence: Did I include facts that I heard from the audio or the model text?
