Building knowledge of the Field (BKoF)
Building knowledge of the Field (BKoF)
The teacher uses a "hook" question to trigger oral engagement.
Activity: The teacher asks, "When you enter the workforce in the future, would you rather work from home in your pajamas, or go to a professional office in formal clothes?"
Goal: To intuitively introduce the concepts of Remote Work (WFH) and Traditional Office Work.
Students listen to the audio of the text. The teacher pauses at key points for immediate interaction.
Listen for Contrasts: The teacher pauses after the second paragraph and asks, "Name one benefit of working from home that you just heard!"
Evidence Spotting: Students are asked to note down reasons why business leaders still value a physical office (e.g., spontaneous collaboration or water cooler conversations).
Students identify modern workplace terms that appear in the text through a Q&A activity.
Term
Meaning in Context
Hybrid Model
A mix of working from home and working in the office.
Commute
The journey between one's home and place of work.
Spontaneous
Happening suddenly without being planned.
Burnout
Physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress.
Work-life Balance
The equilibrium between personal life and career work.
The teacher draws two columns on the board. Based on what they heard, students take turns mentioning arguments for each side.
Pro-Remote Work:
Saves time and money (no commuting).
Higher productivity (fewer interruptions).
Allows companies to hire global talent.
Pro-Office Work:
Strengthens corporate culture.
Fosters innovation through face-to-face interaction.
Protects mental health (prevents isolation).
The teacher concludes this stage with a brief discussion on the "middle ground" solution.
Discussion: "According to the text, what is the best solution? Is it one or the other?"
Student Response: "No, the text suggests a 'Hybrid' approach to get the focus of home and the connection of the office."
Teacher's Prompt during BKoF:
"Listen carefully to the third paragraph. The speaker mentions 'water cooler conversations.' Why does the speaker think these small talks are important for a company?"
Expected Student Response:
"Because those casual talks can lead to brilliant new ideas that don't usually happen during a scheduled video call."
By the end of this stage, students have:
Understood the context of the WFH vs. WFO debate.
Mastered key vocabulary related to the modern world of work.
Recognized multiple perspectives (a core characteristic of a deep Analytical Exposition).
